A Spirit of Participation

The educational programme of any top school should reflect a balance between academic, cultural, environmental and sporting activities. In this respect, Bergvliet endeavours to remain at the cutting edge of each pursuit.
With a wide selection of sports to choose from, there is a place for every pupil, no matter what their level of skill, interest or objective may be. Sport builds confidence, self-esteem, teamwork and a sense of belonging – we believe it is critical to the emotional, social and physical development of our pupils.
Sport is particularly well suited as a means through which life lessons can be learnt and one’s character developed. Through sport, a pupil will learn to win and to lose; to know when to strive for more and when to be gracious in defeat; to push themselves; to lead as well as to be led; to think as a member of a team; to adapt and to co-operate.
Pupils are encouraged to take up sporting and cultural activities. Sports practices take place twice a week so there is ample opportunity for them to become involved in both.

Netball is a winter sport for the girls. We boast six teams in a very competitive league every week. Our girls have access to four Netball courts during the winter months to excel in their chosen sport.

One of the only things offered throughout the year. We have three teams that compete in the chess leagues and we have another two teams that play socially within the school. This normally takes place in our brand new library for a very quiet atmosphere.

The very game of cricket and the spirit in which it ought to be played ties into our core values and aids the development of the young individual into an all-round gentleman. Berglviet is fortunate to be able to accommodate so many players due to the facilities it possesses. There are six turf cricket nets, five artificial cricket nets and two cricket ovals. We are lucky enough to be one of the only schools in Cape Town to have Flood Lights on our main cricket oval to accommodate Day/Night Cricket.

Cross Country

Cross-country running is offered at Bergvliet as a winter sport. A small but dedicated group of pupils makes use of this option, testing their endurance on a wide variety of open-air courses and building a high level of fitness.

Golf has gone from strength to strength since becoming an official sport at the school. Under the guidance of dedicated coaches, our pupils are offered the opportunity to develop their game and improve through regular competition.
