Siyavula

Siyavula is an online Maths (and Science) platform used by the learners at Bergvliet High School in an effort to enhance their results by increasing the time they can spend practising in the subjects. In the month of October Siyavula holds a #1millionmaths challenge in which learners at schools utilising Siyavula are invited to help them reach their goal of completing 1 million maths exercises in one month. The aim of this is to help learners to get ready for their exams by practising their maths with some healthy competition. Names are posted on leader boards weekly and winners in each grade stand a chance to win smartphones, tablets and laptops.

Two Bergvliet High School learners did exceptionally well in this competition and featured in these weekly updates: Loufran Duncan (grade 10) and Micah Retief (grade 9). Micah unfortunately never placed in the top 3 at the end of the competition despite completing thousands of exercises, but Loufran finished in first position in the platinum league in grade 10 and therefore won an Acer Extensa Intel Celeron N3060 15.6″ Notebook! This entailed Loufran completing 7278 questions which resulted in 688 190 “atoms” achieved.

Loufran is pictured with Deborah Torrington, the Siyavula representative who works with BHS as she hands over his prize. Well done to Loufran and we look forward to having many more participants in 2020!
