Bobby Fisher said “ A strong memory, concentration, imagination and a strong will Is required to become a great Chess player” and these certainly are the attributes Luke Fisher is portraying having won gold at District South, he progressed to make the Western Cape Chess team (only top 7 selected). Luke then finished 5th in the WP trials from candidates as far as Port Elizabeth in the Garden Route and Veldrif and Vredenberg on the West Coast.
He received full colours for the Western Province team and competed at SA Schools in Durban between 29th June – 5 July 2019.
Luke’s effort and commitment is huge in a very tough field of candidates, with his Draw against the Candidate Master, Dante Etan being a stroke of genius!
Beyond this, Luke has also been selected to represent WP in the SAJCC U16 team to be played in Boksburg in 03 – 09 January 2020.
Luke has to play tournaments almost every second weekend from Friday to Sunday for most of the year. (qualification requires candidates to play 50 rated games per year – called Grand Prix points)
Well done Luke, we look forward to hearing news from your upcoming tournaments, all the best!!
